Your Massachusetts Moving Checklist

6 to 8 weeks before your move:
- Protect yourself against moving fraud: visit protectyourmove.gov
- Get written estimates for movers or rental truck
- Schedule movers or rental truck
- Create inventory of household items
- Clean out all closets and drawers
4 to 6 weeks before your move:
- Get packing supplies: boxes, packing paper, tape, markers
- Use up or dispose of food, cleaning supplies, and hazardous materials
- Sort through belongings – donate excess clothing and furniture
- Begin packing non-essentials
2 to 3 weeks before your move:
- Set aside critical documents and valuables that you will personally
transport - Transfer prescriptions
- Arrange for move of pets and for kennel/boarding as needed
- Notify parties of your new address:
- Family and friends
- Medical providers
- Schools
- Employers
- Health, life, and auto insurance policies
- Credit card bills
- Fill out change-of-address card with post office
- Arrange utility services (cancel old; start new)
1 week or less before your move:
- Defrost freezer
- Clean refrigerator, stove, and oven
- Confirm arrival time of movers/pick-up time of rental truck
- Have payment ready for movers
- Gather and clean outdoor furniture
- Return cable box, cable modem, DSL modem
- Finish packing
Moving day:
- Ensure that cupboards, closets, storage areas are empty
- Transport pets using secure pet crates and carriers
- Transport important papers and valuables
- Give movers final instructions
- Disassemble beds & pack bedding
- Final walk-through before leaving
After the move:
- Change address on:
- Driver’s license
- Auto registration
- Voter registration
- Bank accounts
